Tivibit - Samsung launches platter 1TB disk drive

Samsung has benefited from the increase of hard disk memory storage densities up to launch a new line of high quality products with capacities up to 1TB.

The Spinpoint F3 line, announced on Tuesday, uses technology such as perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) to increase storage density. This raises the capacity of 500 GB per plate and a plate of two 1TB product possible, according to Samsung.

Increased density means increased performance, so the dish two 1TB Spinpoint product operates up to 30 percent faster than a plate of three 1TB offers the same 3.5-inch form factor, the company added.

Reduce the number of meals means less mechanical parts, which in turn improves the reliability, the company says.

The products operate in F3 and use a 7.200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb per second interface and features Native Command Queuing 16MB/32MB a buffer memory. Incorporate technology called low noise SilentSeek and NoiseGuard.

A unit with a capacity of 500 GB is available now, while the 1TB drives to ship in August, according to Samsung.

Other companies, including Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba, have recently published the 1TB drives and 2 TB configurations of the tray.

On Monday, Western Digital announced a 2.5-inch portable hard drive with 1TB of storage, currently the largest capacity portable units on the market. Blue Scorpio 1 TB uses three 333GB platters.
